i saw this on NASIOC, and thought i'd give it a try (gave me something quiet to do after work while Mrs. Shark was sleeping.) i painted the yellow plastic caps using Krylon Fuzion plastic paint, which actually bonds to the plastic. did it to the LGT, but you can easily do it on an SVX. adds about 30hp, too. :D

Why did you stop there? I see lots more that could have been painted and you could have gained much more HP! :D :D :D

Is that 30hp per item, or a total/aggregate figure - you didn't by chance get any before & after dyno runs did ya?

p.s. Asking for Randy really, but do you think yellow would add more or less hp?

I like it but I think you should pick up a black paint marker and coat the raised lettering.

I like it! It looks like it almost came that way.

Becarful with the paint. I did that and on 99.9% it came out great but on some of my things near the engine start to bubble up. But if you don't mind sanding and painting before every show, go right ahead. Mine looks great, I hope yours comes out too. ;)

But he used a vinyl dye, which actually penetrates the surface of the plastic. It should hold up quite well.

yeah, i have some black Fuzion paint (from doing my gauge cups from shiny black to matte black to match the dash - why i originally went to buy the stuff in the first place) that i plan on doing the oil dipstick and cap with. i'll spray some in a lid and use an artist brush.

no sanding necessary - the Fuzion paint is specially made to actually bond with the plastic. you can paint outdoor plastic chairs with it, etc. i did wipe the caps down with some rubbing alchohol before painting, though, to remove any oil or dirt. another benefit is that the plastic isn't as "textured" with the layer of paint on (especially the oil filler cap) - much easier to clean now. :)

this does look much cooler on an STi, with its red intake and intercooler lettering. still, its easy and only costs you $3 for the can of paint. here's a pic from the thread where i got the idea:

As Tom(SoobieSVX) said, no one takes the time to make the engine look good, they just cover it now.

Yes it is just paint. yes it was dirty. I am not saying it was clean at all. My point is that most companies now don't take the time to engineer an engine to look good and function just as well. Now many companies are just covering their engines with plastic to make it look good which seems like a lack of effort to me
