I have the opportunity to purchase the tranny and rear diff from a friend. first of all will this work? Second of all what exactly do I need besides the diff, tranny, and the small items related to the clutch?

Lucky you! It will work but I will let others tell you what else you will need in addition to those parts. How much is he selling them to you for?

Not yet determined. They only have 45k miles on them. I'm hoping to get them for $500

Anybody local want to help me? Or does anybody know of a shop that's local? I will pay them for their services ( hint, hint, subafreak ;) )

Great choice! :D You'll need the tranny, clutch, starter, pedals and crossmembers from the WRX. You will not need the rear diff as it's the same ratio as the SVX.

David,
Since it comes up a lot, maybe you can add complete lists of parts necessary from all the different options (ie:WRX/2.5rs/Forster) for the swap on the iw page, it might make things eaiser for those considering doing the swap to know ahead of time what is needed from what vehicle/vehicles

what is the formula for calculating the speed for a car in different gears at different speeds? I really like the fact that while on the highway the 4EAT cruises along quietly at 80MPH at around 2750RPM. What would the WRX's rpm's be at at 80mph

I think it's pretty universal. Only the WRX tranny uses the same rear diff as the SVX I believe.

I should also add that the shifter w/linkages and boot can come from the donor as well. (I always forget that one)

Here is what he has: Tranny, tranny mount, clutch, clutch slave?, hubs, flywheel, and pressure plate. He does not have the pedals, or starter. Are those going to be the only two items that I will need to purchase?

What if I just got the Group N tranny mount?

That's it? What about a place to do it? Labor time?

To make things easier you'll probably want Subafreak to manufacture a crossmember for you.

Thats just it, Im betting that off of each choice of donors there are some little differences that people don't think of :D

If someone wants to submit a complete list of parts they used from the donor car on SVX-iw.com I'll push it into the Transmission section.

So can I get an aftermarket lightened flywheel for a WRX? I know someone is gonna burst my bubble with "harmonic balancing" but, I'm just talking about a slightly lighter one.

I just read the article on swaps on Earthworms web-site. Darn it!!! It just sounds like I'll have to do my exhaust at the same time. No sense in bolting the same heavy restrictive apparatus back on. Right? ;) ;) :D

That's not REALLY necessary but if I did another conversion I would delete the 2 front cats and keep the center cat. (opposite of what I did)

What about lightening the flywheel?

What about lightening the flywheel? Not necessary but if I could get a good deal on one then maybe. Just putting in a 5MT makes a world of difference.
