Transmission # Decoder ??

just like there is a VIN decoder is there a similar way of determining the gearbox type via their codes..
eg
The box in my 95 [Aussie model] has a code TZ102YP1CA-K6
I am looking at a replacement box out of an imported Japanese half cut its code is TZ102YL1AA-K9

Harvey has a 95 Aus model, Trans type: TZ102YP1CA
We have a 91 JDM model, Trans type: TZ102YL1AA
Nikfu has a 92 US model, Trans type: TZ102ZM1AA

(not sure about the -K? suffix)

Harvey's Aus model has the same trans as your Aus.
Our JDM model has the same trans as your half cut.

Here's a first go based on a sample of only 3 cars.

The first five digits "TZ102" seems constant.
The next digit, JDM and Aus cars (which have the VTD system) have "Y", the US car (which has the transfer clutch) has "Z".
The next digit differs on all three - can't guess.
The next digit "1" seems constant.
The next digit might be some sort of revision since the 91-92 cars have "A", the 95 has "C".
The next digit "A" seems constant.

I think we need a bigger survey to figure out what these code mean.

I found a posting on usenet by somebody with an '89 Liberty (Australian Legacy). Their had replaced their transmission.

The old one was type TZ102ZB1AA
The new one was type TZ102ZB3AA

As I understand it, the legacy transmission is similar the the SVX one.

"TZ102" as before.
"Z". This matches the US SVX, not the Aus/JDM ones. Does anybody know if the '89 Liberty has VTD or US-style transfer clutch AWD? This would be a good indicator of whether my previous guess was correct.
Next digit "B", can't guess.
Next digit "1" on original, "3" on replacement. Can't guess.
Next digit "A" is same as older SVX's. This could be an indicator of whether the previous guess is correct.
Next digit "A" seems constant.

As I said before, to work this out with any certainty, we need a bigger sample of numbers.

You don't need to look at the trans, the number is printed on the VIN plate. It's under the bonnet next to the top of one of the suspension struts.

I have the same as Nikfu, TZ102ZM1AA on my 92.

I did get a reman from Subaru this past January, if you would like a number off of that let me know where to look for the plate.

From my computer at work:


Transmission codes consists of 10 spaces. Each space except the last two have a meaning.

Example:

T Z 1 0 2 Z M 1 AA

1) T=Transmission

2) Z = Full time AWD AT, A=2WD AT

3) and 4) Distance between gears. For example 1 and 0 would be 108 mm.

5) 2= series code

6) A=2WD, Z=AWD

7) M= 3300cc EMPFI (engine type)

8) 1=1992 (year of manufacture)

9) and 10) AA= No meaning.


This, of course, only applies to US models.

From what I've got so far, for US cars and wherever else those AT configs are used the ATs are like this :
fisrt ATs -TZ102ZM1aa till mid 94
then - TZ102ZM2aa till late 96
then - TZ102ZM3aa 1997

However in Australia I'm waiting on Subaru to provide more info on their coding ..so far all I've got from them is
....from AUD 95 models at this stage - TZ102YP1CA
...Y refers to the "coupling" [their words]
...P refers to 3.3 engine size

so..based on what we've got the breakdown of codes looks the same but prefixes are different .... so...
- TZ102 is universal
- Z, Y or A refer to US style AWD, Y is VTD AWD, A is 2WD
- then 'M' = 'P' = "L' to denote 3.3 boxer US, AUD, and JDM
- 1,2,or 3 must refer to the production run of the AT...

SO now I have a further question [I should probably move this to a new thread but]...now that I've got my head around the codes..at got some collective eyes on the subject..

WOULD YOU MIX and MATCH....would an older series AT work [rebuilt] in later model and vice versa. My 95's box [actually its planetary gear section is shot !! ]

My options for my 95 AUD is to..
1] fit the JDM box [if it could..it should?] coded in my first post - its from the first series of ATs and it is VTD..didn't JDMs have POWER button we in AUD only have the light and have MANUAL button..?? its cost $895 plus full refurb [est $1500..the box is in working order]..so fit ealier model box into later year model

2] replace the planetary gear section of my box, AT specialist thinks he's located a possble match..cost $1100 + $2200 to rebuild my box, OR

3] Subaru has offerred an exchange 95 AUD box $4500 PLUS the cost of repair to planetary gears as this is not covered as part of the exchange !! [their 1st est cost was over $3K + the rebuild..just rude !!]. All $ are AUD

Any thoughts on mix and match [..mismatch ??]

Are you able to check the electrical connectors on both units - are they the same?

TonyShale put a late model UK trans in his early JDM car and found the electrical connectors to be different. I think Joe (svxistentialist) had a similar experience. IIRC it's something to do with the location of speed sensor #2, located in the diff and wired separately on early cars vs. located in the trans and wired into the main connector on later cars.

Don't quote me on that, it's pure speculation. See what Tony and/or Joe have to say about it.
