Well with 102k on my car, i thought it wouldnt not be a bad idea to change the filter on the fuel line. Is it in a place easiely gotten at? Checking subaruparts.com, it dosnt look to diffucult giving the car is jacked up from the back(an experience in itself) It might do me good, my gas mialge sux even after the EGR swap, (that and my flowmaster highflow dosnt like cold weather) Well anyways if any of you have done so please give me a do or a dont. Thanks

I haven't personally changed the filter, but, it shouldn't be difficult. It's the big shiny "coffee can" looking thing in the upper right hand corner of your engine bay as you look toward the driver's seat from the front of the car. Just make sure you release pressure. Unhook the electrical connector to the fuel pump and crank the car a few times. If it starts, let it run 'til it "dies of starvation." Then, you should be able to change the filter without spraying yourself (and your engine) with fuel.

D'uh, lemme see dere. Uh, open up da hood and look in da hole what yer motor is in. Den, look up close to da firewall on da driver's side, den just behind da inside of da fender well, and den, maybe youse can see da shiny ting wid two hoses comin' out da top. Uh, dat dere would be your fuel filter, like , ting. So, uh, dere. Is dat better? :D

I changed the fuel filter a couple months ago and - against my better judgement - followed the advice of a few in yahoo to skip disconnecting the electrical harness and cranking to relieve fuel pressure and instead snap a vise grip on the fuel line during the change. But, it actually worked and I didn't end up spraying raw fuel all over the garage. Just remember that when you take out the old filter it will still be full of gas, so don't tip it over in your engine compartment, instead tip it over in the driveway and light it on fire to dispose of it ;)

What was the EGR Swap?

<<What was the EGR Swap?>>

I like to refer to it as the, "swap" rather then replacement becuase it took my dealership THREE orders to ge tthe right part, all at my expense. Infact they installed the first one and said if i wanted it taken out i would have to pay for that too! argh, im not gonna get all worked up over this....ill just stop talking..its the only dealer in a 70 mile radius..

If you did, I would be interested in the procedure used, and if it messes up the ECU in any way. I don't want to recirculate hot air into my turbo intake. The turbo is enough of a preheater.

I can tell you one thing, my svx was running rich as all hell. I was getting something like 150 mi/tank with in city driving. It didnt seem to damage the car, but you will get the check engine light. My old egr solenoid is stuck closed, if you wanted it i would give it to you for free if you paypaled me shipping charges from madison wi. You could experiment wiht it, but tinkering may be hard. keep in mind it does not open as of now, and your car will run VERY rich.
contact me if you want it

Be careful.
My car was running rich for a long time and my cats got plugged and I failed the WI emmisions test. I had to have new cats put on (after fixing the rich problem) and total for new cats(its illegal to install used cats) was well over $1000

my car is doing this weird up and down idle thing. when i crank the car in the morning especially but even in the middle of the afternoon or after the car has been driven awhile it does the same thing. i thought it might be my idle control valve (solenoid?), but could it be the egr valve. the dealer told me my mas was fine? help?

Hey '94, try unhooking the battery overnight to clear the ecu. The "up and down" is usually the ecu trying to "find" something. Perhaps it has learned something it needs to forget. That's the cheapest and first thing I'd do. Then, go here to see if any of these match your symptoms.
