According to my digital bathroom scale:
2002 WRX 5-speed tranny + starter + pressure plate + TO bearing + crossmember + shift linkage = 175 lbs
2002 WRX flywheel + clutch disk = 25 lbs
smallcar 5 speed conversion kit = 8 lbs
misc = 2 lbs
total for 5-speed = about 210 lbs
Has anyone measured the weight of the corresponding 4eat gear (tranny, starter, TC, flexplate)?

the unit without the TQ is well over 200 lbs thats for sure. I could pick the 5spd up no problem and the auto i had to have someone help me just to get it onto a wagon to wheel it around.
Very intersting, that is lighter then i ever expected.

The auto with TC but no flex plate or starter is almost exactly 250 pounds.

Cool. Thanks. I measured the WRX starter. It weighs about 7 lbs. Assuming the WRX crossmember assembly weighs about 8 lbs, then:
WRX 5MT tranny + pressure plate + clutch disk + TO bearing + flywheel + shift linkage + smallcar adaptor kit = about 193 lbs.
Assuming the 4EAT flexplate weighs about 8 lbs, then the 4EAT tranny + TC + flexplate = about 258 lbs.
So the difference in weight between the 4EAT assembly and the 5MT assembly is around 65 lbs. Not as much as I thought, but this number agrees well with the published difference in weight between a WRX 4EAT sedan and a WRX 5MT sedan (3140 lbs vs 3085 lbs = 55 lbs).

You also haveto take into acount the fluid capasity diffrence, the lines going to the radiator, and the fluid in the radiator. Also wouldent a non hydralic 5spd be lighter.

The extra ATF fluid and fluid lines to/from the radiatior would maybe weigh 5 lbs. A non-hydraulic 5MT would be slightly lighter, maybe 5 lbs. One thing I forgot to include in the 5MT weight estimate was the 5MT pedal assembly. That's good for a few lbs against the 5MT. I also probably overestimated the weight of the flexplate by a pound or two. So, it looks like there is a maximum of a 70 lb difference in weight between the 5MT parts and the 4EAT parts.

I think you're underestimating the weight of the fluid. When I installed my new tranny, I decided to fill the TC (halfway, anyway) before installation and I think I put over half a gallon in there. And that was only half full. The whole system takes around two gallons, if I remember correctly. I bet the 5MT has nowhere near the same fluid capacity.

I have checked the weight.
It is 90 kg (198 lb) without converter, starter and oil. about 7 ltr
I gess the convter add 10 kg (22lb)
The weight of an US spec can be 2-5lb less

ok. I'm probably off a bit. The density of gear oil and ATF are both about 7 lbs/gallon. The capacity of the WRX tranny is about 1 gallon, and the tranny I weighed was about 1/2 full of fluid. If Earthworm's tranny had no ATF in it, then I was off by 10 lbs instead of 5 lbs. So now we're up to a maximum of 75 lbs difference in weight. If Earthworm's tranny was full of ATF when he weighed it, then the difference is going to be closer to 70 lbs.

I definitely did my share of math in school. I thought about getting a minor in math until I took a class on "real analysis". It was supposed to be a math class, but it was more like hell.
