When your brakes start to make heaps of noise does it mean time for new ones or that they just need servicing? Mine routinely make quite a loud noise when they are applied.... gosh i'm good at cars!

Gid'ay Moshol,
There are three causes of noisy brakes. The first is when they are worn down and the spring scrapers touch the disk, to tell you that they need replacing.

The second is caused by air being trapped between the pad and the disk, when the brakes are applied. This is caused by the surface of the pads or the disk surface, becoming glazed and losing their porosity for the air to escape into.

The third is the spring shim plates that are fitted between the pad and the piston. There job is to allow the pressure on the pad to build up as they are squeezed flat, to allow time for the air to escape, before the full pressure between the pad and disk is applied. If not the air will become compress and vibrate out between the surfaces. Producing the noise.

How can you tell which one it is?

If it is the first one, they will make the noise every time, they are applied. The fix is to fit new pads.
The second one can happen in wet weather, when the wet disk has dried over night, to have a film of rust on the surface. As you back out of the garage, the pads spread this rust dust over the surface, so that the they lose their porosity and they squeal till the dust has gone. No fix, don't drive in the wet.
The third is when the spring shims have not been fitted, or fitted wrong, or have lost their spring effect, to become flat. When this happens, they squeal most of the time. Fit new spring shims.

Happy noise fixing.:D

Harvey. ;)

Hi Harvey

Thanks for your very useful advise. Upon close audio analysis over the last week i have decided that it is the second cause which is fortunatley the best option in terms of cost :)

I am in a remarkably silly mood this morning

oops

need to change my profile but can't think of anything else hmmm...

just lurking around the house waiting to pick Chris up from his work Christmas party which was at none other than the truly classy Rooty Hill RSL. His festivities started at 10am and i just spok to him and he still sounded lucid which is rather suprising. He is catching a train to parramatta where i will become svx taxi and deliver some of his mates home. can't wait! Perhaps i'll pack a stretcher and a bucket. mayb a kebab and some more beer would go down better with the boys :)

My car is going sooooo well at the moment (touch wood) The glorious sound of when i exited the h tunnel tonight and rapidly hit 130 on the uphill yeehaaaaa.

Cheeeeeeers all!
