There is this car about 15min away from me for sale for $50. I dunno exactly what it is, but it looks kinda like a pontiac sunbird. It is painted a hideous mixture of red in the back with gold scallops on the front and seems to have some "ricer" mods. It appears to be in decent condition although I dunno if it runs. Now here's my question: My girlfriend is turning 17 in Nov. Right now she only has about $1k for a car and no job at the moment. I'd love to give her more money but I can't afford it with college coming up. I was thinking of buying it for her for her birthday, then just spray painting it with some auto paint (would definately look better than it does now). If she wanted, she could use $100 of the money she has to get it sprayed at Maaco. Do you people think this is a good idea if it runs? It might be ugly, but for $50 I don't think you can buy anything pretty. I've never gotten bad tips from the network before, so I figured I'd see what you had to say about it.

P.S. Mike, I'll trade you for the RX ;)

I'd be leary unless its an old lady or something but from the paint thang I'd say it isn't. I'm sure Mike might take you up on the trade though if you change all the badging to a Cav!:D

The good thing about it though is parts are fairly plentiful. It might be worth it if you can fix what ails it.

Stay Away. For $50 you get what you pay and it's a Sunbird, it probly has that GM/Dayawoo 2.0L in it.

Does she NEED a car? How about a scooter or something? Those are like 4-500 bucks.

Isn't the Sunbird one of the cars that was prone to catching on fire? Maybe I am confused, but I thought it was that car...

I hope it's not because those cars throw engines like you wouldn't believe.

It didn't catch on fire but I've rescued a friend stranded on the highway a couple of times.

I didn't know much about them and I didn't know about the engine problems. I've decided not to buy it for her just because I don't want her to end up getting stuck somewhere. Thanks again.
